Postdoctoral Researcher

Florian Abraham

Florian Abraham is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Research Center on Economies, Societies, Arts and Techniques (CRESAT), Université de Haute-Alsace, where he contributes to the ERC-funded GeoNuFE project.

He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Exeter (2023). His doctoral research examined the controversy surrounding the Kvanefjeld mining project in Greenland, analysing how uranium and rare earths extraction intersect with competing visions of green energy futures in Europe. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies (STS), environmental sociology, and controversy studies, his work mobilises concepts such as nuclearity, risk, uncertainty, and agnotology to explore the political and material dimensions of extractive projects.

Florian’s research lies at the intersection of the sociology of nuclear energy, environmental sociology, and the sociology of risks. He investigates uranium extraction, radioactive waste management, radioprotection, anti-nuclear movements, and the emergence of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). His recent work also examines public attitudes towards nuclear technologies across Europe, notably through his involvement in the European ECOSENS project (HORIZON-EURATOM), where he led research activities in the United Kingdom and contributed to several project deliverables.

Before joining CRESAT, Florian held postdoctoral positions at the University of Exeter, funded by UK EPSRC and HORIZON-EURATOM. His research combines qualitative interviews, documentary analysis, survey methods, and interdisciplinary collaboration, reflecting his long-standing interest in the social, political, and ethical dimensions of energy transitions.
